NAPOLEONVILLE – The Assumption Parish Police Jury has announced that Tuesday, October 31, will be the official date for Trick or Treat celebrations, with activities scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. and conclude at 8:00 p.m.
In order to ensure a secure and enjoyable Halloween experience for all, Sheriff Falcon shared several useful guidelines:
- Parents and children are advised to steer clear of multicolored candies that are unpackaged or repackaged.
- Multicolored candy, such as Skittles and Sweet Tarts, should be avoided entirely as they have been linked to the lethal drug fentanyl.
- Inspect all pieces of candy before allowing children to consume them.
- Encourage children to only accept commercially packaged candy and avoid any opened or repackaged items.
- Do not visit the homes of known sex offenders. If you see porch or outdoor lights on at such residences, immediately contact the Sheriff’s Office at 985-369-2912 or call 911.
- Make sure costumes fit well and allow for a complete range of motion without causing tripping hazards.
- Opt for bright, easily visible costumes that glow in the dark.
- Large face masks can obstruct vision; consider using face paint instead.
- Choose non-flammable materials for costumes.
- Keep children well-lit with glow sticks, lights attached to their outfits, or reflective tape.
- Provide flashlights for children or guardians accompanying them.
- Ensure that children are always accompanied by adults during trick-or-treating.
- Travel in groups rather than individually.
- Visit only well-lit locations where residents are known.
- Do not allow children to enter strangers’ homes while out trick-or-treating.
- For drivers taking children around on Halloween night, follow road safety rules. Remain vigilant for pedestrians while driving slowly and ensure children are safely secured in the vehicle while it is in motion.
- If children are walking during Trick or Treat, they should stay off the road, under constant adult supervision.
