The U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Morgan City responded to two incidents involving shrimping vessels on the Atchafalaya River over the weekend. Commander Mary A. Gilday, who addressed Monday’s luncheon of the Atchafalaya Intracoastal Coaltion, said one of the vessels sank on the river, although it was outside of the channel and is not impeding river traffic.

The second incident involved another shrimping vessel that broke loose from its mooring lines, which caused the vessel to drift and strike the Morgan City Railroad Bridge. Gilday said the incident did not result in any damage to the railroad bridge.

Gilday reminded vessel operators to ensure that lines are properly secured, especially as inclement weather approaches.
