UPDATE:  Desmond Eugene has been taken into custody.

IBERIA PARISH (August 28, 2024)- The State Fire Marshal’s Office, in partnership with the Jeanerette Police Department, is asking for the public’s assistance locating a suspect accused of leaving a delayed incendiary device at the Jeanerette City Hall.

Desmond Eugene, 44, is wanted in connection with the crime that occurred just before 1 p.m. on Wednesday, August 28.
Investigators say Eugene arrived at City Hall on a bicycle and attempted to get into the Mayor’s Office portion of the building. When that was unsuccessful, Eugene set a fire using a delayed incendiary device and then left the building on the bicycle.

There were several people inside City Hall at the time of the fire. Fortunately, no one was injured and there was minimal damage reported.

At this time, investigators are actively attempting to locate Eugene in connection with this case. Any information about Eugene’s whereabouts can be called into the Jeanerette Police Department at 337-276-6323 or shared through the SFM’s Arson Tipline at 1-844-954-1221. Tips can also be submitted online at lasfm.org where the information can be shared anonymously.
