The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of a K9 Officer, Jace. The sheriff’s office released the following statement on its Facebook page.
“It is with heavy hearts today that we report K9 Jace was put to sleep for health reasons. Yesterday afternoon, SMPSO deputies and K9 deputies from Franklin P.D., Jeanerette Marshal’s Office, and Morgan City P.D. gave K9 Jace a Hero’s Escort and his handlers were by his side to comfort him.”

K9 Jace began his law enforcement career with the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office before coming to the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office three years ago. He assisted with countless arrests and was instrumental in locating narcotics many times. K9 Jace was responsible for the seizure of thousands of dollars of narcotics-related funds.
“K9 Jace helped us build our K9 Division by being one of the first additional K9s that Sheriff Blaise Smith added to the SMPSO. K9 Jace has helped build community relations by doing demos at schools, churches, and for the general public. He will be missed.” -Cpt. Chris Veillion, K9 Division
