Sara Elizabeth Childress Vercher, a native of Mansfield, LA and a longtime resident of Centerville and Bayou Sale, passed away at the age of 90 during the early morning hours of Thursday, August 10, 2023.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 17, 2023 at Coulee Bethel Cemetery in Campti, LA during a 1:00 PM graveside service.

Sara was a longtime educator who dedicated over 45 years of educating our youth and trying to instill the importance of their education but also to love and respect one another. She truly loved her students. After her husband, James “Jim” Robert, went to be with the Lord, Sara volunteered as a teacher at Bayou Vista Faith Baptist Christian School, which she did for three years until her health began to decline.

Survivors include three sons, Robert M. Vercher, Ronald R. Vercher and his wife Vicki, and Robin D. Vercher; sister, Barbara Anne Childress Westbrook and her husband Van; granddaughter, Tabitha Vercher Hopkins; great grandchildren Rylie Elizabeth and Ethan Hopkins; brothers-in-law, J.W. Vercher and his wife Ethel Mae, and Kenneth Vercher and his wife Linda; sisters-in-law, Shirley Vercher and Melba Vercher; and dear friends, Veronica and Henry Rushing, and Brandan Trahan and family; as well as by a host of extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, James Robert “Jim” Vercher; her parents, James Monroe Childress and Perry Elizabeth Nelson Childress; brothers, Hollie Childress and his wife Florrinell, Perry Childress, and James Childress and his wife Joan; and brother-in-law, Ben David Vercher.
