A 21-year-old Patterson man has been arrested and charged with a slew of vehicle burglaries that took place across several parishes dating back to early 2022.
Gregory Joseph Payne, of 1809 J Street, was taken into custody by the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday, June 26, 2024. He faces 11 counts of simple burglary of a motor vehicle stemming from incidents in the Bayou L’Ourse area.
The investigation began on January 22, 2022, when deputies responded to multiple reports of vehicle burglaries on Griffin Court. Their probe identified 11 vehicles that had been broken into and uncovered electronic evidence that pointed to a suspect vehicle.
That same vehicle was later linked to additional burglaries in the Gibson and Stephensville areas.
Through their ongoing investigation, detectives were able to identify multiple suspects, including Payne, and place him at the scenes of the crimes when they occurred.
Payne was already being held at the St. Mary Parish Jail on unrelated charges in other jurisdictions. He was transferred to the custody of the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office to face the new charges.
In addition to the 11 counts of vehicle burglary, Payne is also facing fugitive charges from the St. Martin Parish and Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Offices.
As of now, Payne remains behind bars awaiting a bond hearing.
