The Louisiana Workforce Commission is hosting a Reemployment Orientation Meeting and Job Fair on Friday, March 1 at South Louisiana Community College Young Memorial Campus in Morgan City. The Worker Transition Assistance is in response to a recent WARN notice by Swiftships that they are planning to lay off approximately 80 workers at its Morgan City location.

A WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) is a notice required by the federal WARN Act in the United States, which mandates that employers with 100 or more employees provide at least 60 days advance written notice of a plant closing or mass layoff affecting 50 or more employees.

According to the Louisiana Workforce Commission, the layoff at Swiftships in Morgan City was due to the loss of a contract with the US Navy. They were in negotiations for a new contract when the Navy issued a work stoppage order and negotiations were ceased.

Workers who have been affected by the layoff are invited to attend the orientation meeting at 9:00 am, followed by the Job Fair from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm.  Several local shipyards and employers are expected to attend.
