Miami, Fla.–based Magnet Defense LLC announced it has completed the acquisition of Jeanerette, La.–based boatbuilder Metal Shark, a move the company says will strengthen its ability to produce autonomous maritime platforms at scale, according to Marine Log.
Magnet Defense, whose mission is to develop autonomous unmanned surface vessels to support U.S. national security and allied maritime operations, emerged publicly last month after more than two years of development. The company unveiled its first autonomous vessel, the M48, an AI-enabled platform backed by more than $50 million in investment. According to Magnet, the M48 has accumulated more than 32,000 nautical miles and over 390 days at sea.
The acquisition of Metal Shark is described as a key step in Magnet Defense’s strategy to combine advanced robotics and AI-driven systems with domestic, industrial-scale shipbuilding. By integrating Metal Shark’s facilities, workforce, and manufacturing expertise, Magnet Defense plans to transition from prototype development to sustained, high-volume production.
Metal Shark brings more than two decades of experience in designing and building mission-specific vessels, with more than 2,000 boats delivered worldwide. Its customer base includes the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Coast Guard, and military forces from allied nations.
The company operates two manufacturing facilities in Louisiana, totaling more than 125,000 square feet across 40 acres. The facilities are supported by an experienced workforce and engineering team, providing Magnet Defense with immediate production capacity and operational depth.
