Sheriff Tim Soignet of Terrebonne Parish has announced the arrest of a Houma man following charges in a sexually-related case after a victim reported the incident. 47-year-old Garrett Jerome McElroy is now facing Third-Degree Rape charges in relation to the ongoing investigation.
The Special Victim’s Unit (SVU) of the Sheriff’s Office carried out a thorough investigation into the reported incident, identifying McElroy as the offender. As detectives continued their inquiry following McElroy’s arrest, new information emerged which led to a decision not to publicize his detention immediately, fearing it could impede the investigation.
McElroy was incarcerated at the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex on charges but was later freed with a $100,000 bond set by local judges. The probe into McElroy’s actions is still ongoing.
Given the nature of the offenses and considering additional details uncovered by investigators, detectives believe that it is highly probable that other victims exist. They are urging any other victims to come forward and contact the Special Victim’s Unit of the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office at (985)876-2500.
