De-Icing Operations Scheduled to Begin Tuesday Afternoon on Highway 90/Atchafalaya River Bridge

Morgan City Mayor Lee Dragna tells KQKI News that Louisiana DOTD de-icing equipment which was intended to be used on the Highway 90/Atchafalaya River bridge broke down Tuesday morning, therefore the bridge was not able to be de-iced.

Dragna said Morgan City Public Works mechanics repaired the equipment, but by the time it had been repaired,  too much ice and snow had built up on the the bridge and just spraying the de-icing materials would not have been effective. He said once the snowfall begins to decrease later Tuesday afternoon or evening, crews will scrape the snow from one lane of the bridge in each direction and de-ice each lane, primarily for emergency vehicles to cross the bridge.

You may listen to the exclusive interview with Dragna below.

Officials are asking the public to remain off the roadways due to the treacherous driving conditions and for the safety of first responders.
