Local law enforcement officials and media engaged with Berwick High students in a dynamic session demonstrating the importance of communication skills. The workshop, conducted on Wednesday morning, included a collaboration between law enforcement personnel, media, and eager students, where real-world applications of communication were emphasized through hands-on activities.
Sheriff-Elect Gary Driskell highlighted the significance of connecting with the youth, “It’s a huge thing for me, as you know. I believe in community policing, getting out, talking to the kids. Sometimes it just takes a few minutes of your attention, you know, that they’ll appreciate everything that you do, and to build a closer-knit group together.”
The interactive session involved the students assisting in creating press releases, thereby actively participating in an exercise mirroring real life challenges faced by authorities. Their contributions reflect not only their sharp intellect but also their readiness to handle pressing issues with maturity. “These kids asked a lot of good questions. They were very smart with the questions they asked, informative, and I see a bright future right here in Berwick,” Sheriff-Elect Driskell added.
Public Information Officer David Spencer added to the commendation for the students’ performance, “Today, we wanted to show them, we kind of wanted to take them inside to say, if we had a situation, a crime that was committed, how would we put together our messaging? How would we structure that? These guys are brilliant because they participated.”
Spencer further applauded the intersection of modern technology with education, indicating advancements since his days as an educator. Tech integration was shown as a vital component in modern communication strategies, which was also part of today’s lessons.
Sheriff-Elect Driskell and Spencer expressed gratitude towards Berwick High’s faculty and staff, noting that such collaborations are invaluable for both law enforcement officers and students alike.
