Pierre Part, La. — Louisiana State Police Troop C is investigating a fatal crash involving a bicyclist that occurred Wednesday evening in Assumption Parish.
Shortly before 6:00 p.m. on January 7, 2026, troopers responded to a serious injury crash on Louisiana Highway 1016-2 (Belle River Road) near Cypress Street. The crash claimed the life of 65-year-old Dalton Ackman of Pierre Part.
According to the preliminary investigation by Louisiana State Police Troop C, Ackman was traveling northbound in the roadway on a bicycle without the required lighting. For reasons still under investigation, a 2012 Ford F-150, also traveling northbound, struck Ackman with its right side. After the initial impact, Ackman and the bicycle came to rest in the northbound lane, where he was then struck by a 2024 Ford Bronco traveling behind the F-150.

Ackman sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died. Both vehicle drivers were properly restrained and were not injured.
Troopers reported that the driver of the Ford F-150 showed no signs of impairment and voluntarily provided a breath sample, which indicated no alcohol detected. Standard toxicology samples were collected from Ackman and the driver of the Ford Bronco for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Troopers Urge Bicycle Safety Awareness

Louisiana State Police remind bicyclists that state law classifies bicycles as vehicles, requiring cyclists to follow the same traffic laws as motorists. Troopers stress the importance of:

Using proper lighting when riding in low-light conditions
Wearing bright or reflective clothing
Riding as close as possible to the right side of the roadway, except when passing or turning left
Never assuming that motorists can see you
