Berwick Police Announce DWI Checkpoint During National “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” Campaign

Berwick’s Police Chief, David Leonard, Sr., has announced plans for a DWI checkpoint as part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, taking place from August 18 to September 4, 2023. This campaign, funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, aims to decrease DWI-related crashes through public education and enforcement initiatives, contributing to safer roads.

On August 25, 2023, a checkpoint is scheduled to occur within Berwick’s city limits, extending into the early hours of August 26. Law enforcement officers from the Lafayette Police Dept. and other local agencies will be assisting. In addition to targeting drunk driving, they will be monitoring for other traffic safety offenses such as seatbelt use, child restraint violations, and distracted driving.

In response to questions about why plans of these checkpoints are announced instead of surprising drivers, officials clarify that public notice is an essential requirement stipulated by the Louisiana Supreme Court. The purpose of checkpoints is not entrapment but rather raising awareness about dangerous driving behaviors and reducing violations. To achieve this goal, specific checkpoint locations within Berwick remain undisclosed in the announcement.

Chief Leonard encourages individuals to plan ahead to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He suggests appointing designated drivers or using ride-hailing services or taxis for safe transportation. He also requests patience and cooperation from drivers as they pass through these checkpoints while emphasizing the significance of raising awareness for traffic safety initiatives.
