On Sunday afternoon, July 2, 2023, Assumption Parish Sheriff’s deputies and detectives responded to a shooting incident at 111 Elaine St.in Bayou L’Ourse.
Upon arrival, deputies made contact with several individuals at the scene who advised a shooting had occurred and there was one victim inside the home.
Deputies located a Hispanic male, 40-year-old Atanacio Guerrero, of Bayou L’Ourse with multiple gunshot wounds who was deceased.
Deputies identified the suspect as Joseph H.Gilchrist, Sr., of Elaine St., Bayou L’ourse.
According to witnesses, Guerrero entered Gilchrist’s home at approximately 3:40 PM. Immediately upon entering, Gilchrist reportedly pulled a large caliber weapon and began asking questions of Guerrero. Shortly thereafter, Gilchrist allegedly fired several shots fatally wounding Guerrero.
Deputies arrested Gilchrist at the scene. He was booked into the parish detention facility on a charge of second degree murder.
He remains incarcerated pending a bond hearing.
