A Bayou L’Ourse man is behind bars following a domestic disturbance that turned violent on Friday. According to a release from Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon, 35-year-old Jerret Charles Cortez of Vivian Street has been arrested and charged with felony domestic abuse battery involving strangulation and simple assault.

Deputies responded to a call at a residence in Bayou L’Ourse and made contact with the victim, who reported that Cortez was on the property. When the victim confronted Cortez to determine his business at the location, the suspect allegedly became aggressive and physically attacked the victim, grabbing him in a choking manner.

The victim managed to break free, but Cortez continued his assault. A bystander attempted to intervene, but was unable to halt the attack until Cortez voluntarily stopped striking the victim and fled the scene.

Sheriff’s deputies quickly located Cortez and took him into custody. He was booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center, where he remains jailed pending a bond hearing.
