Approximately 25 acres of a cane field near Franklin burned Monday afternoon which were extinguished by area fire departments. Franklin, St. Mary Parish District 11 and Baldwin Fire Departments were dispatched just before 4:00 pm for a cane field that was on fire near Oakland Manor on Irish Bend Road.

Irish Bend Road was closed due to smoke and fire trucks on the roadway while firefighters maintained a perimeter around the field that was on fire. The cause was determined to be accidental. No homes were damaged or threatened at any time and there were no injuries reported. Centerville Volunteer Fire provided fire coverage to the City of Franklin while crews were on scene.
