Forecasters say there is a potential for a surface low to develop over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico early this week, bringing the possibility of heavy rainfall to the Louisiana and Texas coastlines. The National Hurricane Center says the low pressure system now has a 60% chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 7 days, although it’s too early to tell if or what impacts will be. However, there is an increased risk for possible heavy rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday, especially for Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas.
A tropical wave over the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico is currently producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. The wave is expected to move over the Bay of Campeche later on Saturday, and an area of low pressure is forecast to develop while interacting with a frontal boundary. A tropical depression could then form during the early or middle part of next week while the system moves slowly northwestward over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.
