THIBODAUX, La. – Nicholls State University’s Department of Petroleum Engineering Technology and Safety Management (PETSM) recently received a $9,500 donation from the Morgan City Open Fishing Rodeo (MCOFR), while Nicholls Veterans Services received a $2,500 donation. This marks MCOFR’s 11th year contributing to Nicholls’ PETSM program and the third year supporting the university’s veterans.
Since 2013, MCOFR has donated over $94,000 to the PETSM program, allowing for renovations and expansions of classrooms, technology improvements, and the construction of a state-of-the-art well control simulation lab. The funds given to Nicholls Veterans will help students whose educational benefits have ended. A panel will select candidates based on criteria such as GPA.
“Our students benefit greatly from MCOFR’s generous donations, which enable better engagement with industry partners and enhance classroom experiences and laboratories,” said Michael Gautreaux, Executive Director of Petroleum Engineering Technology and Safety Management at Nicholls.
MCOFR relies on sponsorships and business donations to make impactful contributions. “By increasing participation beyond St. Mary Parish in terms of sponsorships and attendees—including golfers, fishers, and businesses—we hope to continue supporting Nicholls in providing education and promoting a higher quality of life within our community,” said Samuel Cannata, operations manager at Tanks-A-Lot.
Founded in 2013, MCOFR is a nonprofit corporation that aims to foster community spirit within the local oil and gas industry while benefiting organizations promoting community growth. The corporation seeks to provide family-friendly events where locals can enjoy fishing and golf.
The 2023 Morgan City Open Fishing Rodeo and Golf Scramble was held in June, with proceeds benefiting various charitable causes including Nicholls PETSM and South Louisiana Community College. To date, MCOFR has donated over $174,000 to the tri-parish area and aims to contribute even more in the future.
