RECKLESS OPERATION OF A MOTOR VEHICLE INVOLVING A CRASH

On Thursday July 23, 2020, at approximately 12:06 pm, the Berwick Police Department responded to a call of a two vehicle crash near the intersection of La. Hwy 182 at Sixth Street in Berwick.  Upon officers arriving on scene, it was determined that the driver of one the vehicles was deceased. The deceased driver was identified as Stephen Michael Schaub of Bayou Vista.

During the course of the investigation, the driver of the other vehicle involved was identified as Anita Marie Steel of Morgan City.  Multiple witnesses on scene indicated that Steel’s vehicle, a white Chevy Impala, was observed driving extremely reckless, passing motorists on the LA Highway 182 bridge, and traveling at high rates of speed.  Steel’s vehicle was then observed failing to stop at the traffic signal, which was red at the time, at the intersection of La. Hwy 182 at Sixth Street, and striking Schaub’s vehicle.

Steel was transported to Ochner St. Mary where a blood alcohol kit was performed with Toxicology results pending.  She was treated for minor injuries and released into the custody of Berwick Police Officers.  After a thorough investigation, a warrant was prepared for Steel’s arrest.  Steel was booked into the Berwick Jail on the charges of Vehicular Negligent Homicide and Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle with a Crash.
