St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office’s Most Popular Deputy Retires

K9 Buddy is an 8.5-year-old Dutch Shepherd who is certified in narcotics detection, criminal apprehension, handler protection, article searching, and tracking at the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office. His career in law enforcement spans 5+ years.

Buddy has been recognized for his skills during his time at the SMPSO. Among other honors, his latest was in 2019 when he was ranked 4th best patrol K9 at the National Narcotic Detector Dog national competition.

His work as a K9 was impressive. Buddy contributed to one of St Mary Parish’s largest cocaine seizures (4.4 pounds / or 2 kilos).

Buddy has played a crucial role in helping to develop the SMPSO’s K9 Division and getting it to where it is now by demonstrating how useful a great K9 could be to an agency.

Buddy will be retired to his forever home with his handler, Lt. Chris Veillion, and the Veillion family, where he will continue to be treated with love and respect for the service he has provided for the citizens of St Mary Parish. He is looking forward to hanging out with Lt. Veillion’s two kids and going to the camp.

Buddy will greatly be missed in his role as a K9 on patrol at the SMPSO.
