St. Mary Parish Coroner: 18 COVID-19 Related Deaths in St. Mary Parish, 8 at Franklin Nursing Home

Statement from St. Mary Parish Coroner Dr. Eric Melancon

“The Coroner’s Office has handled 20 deaths in the last 7 days and 11 are COVID related deaths. Total of 18 COVID deaths since our first one on April 8, 2020. Eight of the 18 have been at Legacy with 31 total residents infected as of yesterday.

We are still working on containment efforts but the facility is running short on PPE and staff. Homeland Security, as well as others, are working to meet their needs as well as the needs of EMS and First Responders.

I ask that people remain steadfast in their commitment to social distancing, hand washing, and Governor Edwards’ “stay at home” order. We will continue to work with local and parish officials with direction from the Department of Health and Governor Edwards guidance to ensure the safety of the residents of St. Mary Parish.

I would also like to clarify a rumor that has been circulating with regards to the introduction of COVID into Legacy of Franklin. The virus was carried into the facility by an ASYMPTOMATIC employee, who showed no symptoms.”
