Iberia Parish – On December 4, 2020, shortly after 4:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop I was notified of a two-vehicle fatality crash involving a motorcycle and a school bus on Louisiana Highway 182 at Louisiana Highway 88 in Iberia Parish. The crash claimed the life of 45-year-old Shane Lacour of St. Martinville.
The initial investigation revealed Lacour was driving a 2016 Harley Davidson motorcycle east on La 182. At the same time, a 2018 Bluebird school bus, being driven by 81-year-old Maudry Kennedy, turned left onto La 88 off of La 182. Once the school bus made the turn onto La 88, the school bus stopped before proceeding to cross the railroad tracks, as required by state law. The rear end of the bus had not fully cleared the intersection causing the motorcycle to strike the right rear side of the bus.
Despite wearing a DOT approved helmet, Lacour suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Kennedy was properly restrained and was not injured. The bus was transporting three students at the time of the crash, all of whom were uninjured.
Kennedy, who showed no signs of impairment, did submit a voluntary breath sample which indicated no alcohol in her system. A toxicology sample was obtained from Lacour for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Motorcycles are smaller than other vehicles and are more difficult to see. Drivers are asked to pay attention behind the wheel and to always watch for motorcycles.
Troop I has investigated 54 fatal crashes resulting in 59 deaths in 2020.
