President Biden Commutes Prison Sentence for Morgan City Man

A Morgan City man is one of 75 people to have their sentences commuted by President Joe Biden as part of Second Chance Month.

Terry Booty of Morgan City was being held for Conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute 500 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing a detectable amount of methamphetamine. He was sentenced on November 13, 2008 to 240 months in prison, a 10-year term of supervised released and a $10,000 fine.

Booty’s commuted sentence is set to expire on April 26, 2023, with the remainder to be served in home confinement, leaving intact and in effect the 10-year term of supervised release and the unpaid remainder, if any, of the $10,000 fine.

In a statement, Biden said, “Today, I am pardoning three people who have demonstrated their commitment to rehabilitation and are striving every day to give back and contribute to their communities. I am also commuting the sentences of 75 people who are serving long sentences for non-violent drug offenses, many of whom have been serving on home confinement during the COVID-pandemic—and many of whom would have received a lower sentence if they were charged with the same offense today, thanks to the bipartisan First Step Act.”
