Nicholls Player Presenting War of the Worlds Thursday

THIBODAUX, La. — The Nicholls Players and Colonel Media Group plan to reenact the infamous radio broadcast of H. G. Wells’ novel, “The War of the Worlds,” that had some believing Martians were invading.

In 1938, Orson Welles narrated a radio adaptation that presented the tale as if it were a news broadcast. The broadcast reportedly caused mass panic as an estimated 1.7 million listeners did not realize the story was fiction.

The story sees Martians invade Southern England and defeat the world’s armies. The aliens impose their will on the planet until they are defeated by their lack of immunity to the planet’s pathogens.

Part of Nicholls Halloween Fest, Nicholls will recreate the radio performance at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29 in the Mary and Al Danos Theater. The event will also feature a livestream.

The in-person performance will follow university COVID-19 safety protocols. Guests must bring masks, social distance and to answer health questions and have their temperature checked.

Tickets will be $5, cash only, at the door, which will open at 6:30 p.m.

The Nicholls Players will also ask for donations to support its future productions. You can donate via the Nicholls Foundation by selecting “Other” in the gift allocation section and typing in Nicholls Players.
