Louisiana Secretary of State Seeks to Postpone April 4 Primary Election Amid Coronavirus Concerns

By MELINDA DESLATTE Associated Press
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana’s chief elections officer is asking the governor to postpone the state’s April 4 presidential primary election for two months because of the new coronavirus. Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin sent an emergency request to Gov. John Bel Edwards on Friday asking for a June 20 primary date. Edwards was expected to agree to the request. That would make Louisiana the first state to push back its election because of the virus. Louisiana’s health department said Friday that more than 30 people have tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. For most people, the virus causes only mild or moderate symptoms such as fever and cough.
