Louisiana House approves $250 payments for frontline workers

(The Center Square) – The Louisiana House of Representatives on Thursday sent the state Senate a proposal to give workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic $250 of one-time “hazard pay.”

“Critical infrastructure workers” who made $50,000 or less last year are eligible. That includes health care providers, grocery store employees, bus drivers and many other types of workers who worked at least 200 hours outside their homes between March 22 and May 14.

Eligible workers would be able to apply with the Louisiana Department of Revenue from July 15 through Oct. 21.

Rep. Sam Jenkins, the Shreveport Democrat who authored House Bill 70, said he would have preferred to include higher-income workers but wanted to control the cost, which will be paid for out of federal CARES Act pandemic relief money. His original version set the income threshold at $70,000.

“We tried to find a midpoint salary,” he said in response to a question about the income limit. “We have critical workers, believe it or not representative, making minimum wage.”

He suggested adjustments could be made later if money is left over.

The program is capped at $50 million in payments, half from $511 million currently set aside for local governments and half from a $300 million grant fund for small businesses. The Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget has authority to shift money from one fund to another, and Jenkins said his bill would not prevent the committee from adding $25 million back into the business fund if local governments are unable to use their full allotment.

    1. This is a total slap in the face!!! $250 for essential workers who put their lives and their families lives on the line, while people are sitting at home drawing 600+ in unemployment, foodstamps, welfare, etc. But yall think 250 dollars is sufficient “hazard pay” for the essential workers who kept the damn state up and running while everything else was shut down, and then to top it off you put a cap on eligibility at 50,000…chances are that the ones who was truly saving lives, probably make more than 50,000. So what about them??? Do they not deserve “hazard pay?”

      1. Amen said it again I work at Alliance Compressors and so many of the working had the virus and we still had to come to work or we wouldn’t have a job. I have little babies at home so you telling me our live is only worth $250 that’s it 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️

      2. Exactly! $250 is insulting and essential workers in a hospital setting or medical profession likeky are about that 50k threshold!

      1. I worked the pamdic since day one never stop and I’m still working never got one dime of cov money. Risking my life and my heath and also my family and all we get is $250.00 that is really slap in face . Our supervisor said they felt that prn people don’t deserve to get cov money because our status and I felt that was a slap in face etc

    1. I work at a grocery store in tallulah Louisiana dougs market but its private owned so can we still get money for covid-19

  1. Is all the money going to those who put their lives on the line with this virus at hand? How many House of Representatives putting their hands in the cookie jar and stealing government funded money from the ones who resist their lives to save others?

    1. This is ridiculous as our side continue to go to work every day all day bc we are so short and the ppl that got to sit home got 600(+) a week for all that time… might as well just give us that 7pm stop and hand clap daily for essential workers like they were doing over in New York. Our world is literally ass backwards: inmates (for the really heinous crimes as well) get free cable, meals, shelter, etc and have all the rights in the world; can utilize buildings WiFi use the tablets to message and/or call family/friends, etc. ppl who don’t go to work get food stamps and unemployment checks or social security/disability even though you see them out doing WAY more than you can do 98% of the days, Medicaid/Medicare for those mentioned beforehand (x2), section 8 housing, LiHeap energy assistance, etc.; while those that work hard have to pay for their food, housing that is expensive and/or overpriced, health insurance whose premiums can take your entire check yet you still have deductibles and more you have to come up with, 100% of our utility bills goes unpaid unless we pay them, and after you work hard and/or get education (with student loans, bc the aforementioned get it for free as well) and a higher paying job you are penalized when tax season comes around because you make too much too file for unearned income on your own kids (that you pay for all their food, housing, medical bills, education, etc as well bc you work and can’t get it for free or highly discounted like the others) and yet they either sell their kids, claim them their selves and collect the unearned income, etc. and get a huge income tax check, if you work hard long hrs and make over time Uncle Sam wants almost all of it and you pay out the whazoo in taxes, those that really need some kind of pain medication for chronic condition can’t get a dr to give to them yet the ones that don’t need it that sell them literally get boatloads prescribed every month on a regular basis. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ I mean I could keep on going and going and going but you understand the basic gist of it, I’m sure. Now this lets reward our hard workers that not only risked their lives but their immediate families lives as well 250$!!!

      1. Exactly….we put our life and our families life on the line and all we get is a one time 250. Straight bull!

      2. This is an insult 😒, here they giving $754 a week to ppl sitting at home doing NOTHING, and here ppl like us putting our lives at risk everyday 😒 😑 🙄

        1. Lord I’m not being ungrateful at all, but 250 dollars is an insult. We put are health on the line daily, and you mean to tell me all we are worth is 250 dollars.

      3. You are right Nicole and a lot of them getting more taxes back then we are ..they not working but have someone fix it for self employed to get 5-6thousand back with kids from taxes and we don’t get s… back that not right

    1. Just my opinion but I find it sad that the ppl on the front line only getting 250 for putting there life on the line I can’t believe that’s all there worth #justmyopinion#

      1. My point exactly but the ppl who was not working getting 600 plus they can kiss my ass

      2. I’m a ORA and an CNA, I love my job and I could’ve sat on my butt and collect unemployment but I love helping ppl.The state of Louisiana could’ve and should’ve showed some appreciation to ALL who put their lives and families at risk.SOMEPEOPLEREALLYCARES.Thanks anyway GOD got us.

      3. Exactly!!! Yet, the people on unemployment are getting 800 plus a week. They even got the stimulus money and were able to stay home safe and sound. I know I’ve worked everyday

        1. Same here I agree I work in a nursing home 12 hour shifts and people that don’t work got the same amount of stimulus check for doing what?? A slap in the face is an under statement down right unfair.

      4. I definitely agree when the ones that only get 100 or 200 a week and us frontline nurses doctors cna housekeeper get just 250 wth when they ass get 7 to 800 a week and more if they unemployment is more.the stateis so damn backwards. Just my opinion.

  2. 250 per week we worked or just 250? Meanwhile unemployed people got 600 extra every week to stay home???

  3. I work at a supermarket from day one of pandemic we have been open. We were all trying to protect ourselves with hand sanitizer, lysol wipes. Disinfectant sprays, alchol to protect ourselves. Scrambling to buy a mask or two. We are supplied our mask now as needed. Spending money that we nedded for bills, food on the table. Louisiana is the poorest state working a minimum job. Money was tight then finally food stamps went up u got more if u wasn’t at max. Just getting out of bed to go work a 7.25 hour job to try and make ends meet. We don’t qualify for full benefits. When the pandemic hits u get full benefits. I am thankful for receiving full benefits at this time. Finally we got a stimulus check that was gone in a blink of an eye. Bills rent car notes behind u play catch up. U end up right back where you started at. Yes a $250 would be helpful.. Governor, representatives, senators help out our essential workers more. Raise our minimum wage up for Louisiana. Not only essential workers our elderly need help. As I close thank you for all what you have done. Now we need to pray for our Heavenly Father to help us find a cure.. Americans pray pray Amen!!

      1. Not everyone can leave the state. Let’s keep it real ok. I have an education. It’s easily said then done.

  4. I’m a home health worker can we get more information about applying why should be have to apply out job title servers the purpose already

  5. They need to be ashamed offering us 250 after nobody was coming to work we went out there and face death everyday keep the 250 golden dollars buy y’all self something cuz I rather keep living pay check to pay check

    1. It’s been in effect. Usually this should’ve happened the first time COLVID 19 hits the nursing home, but we can’t do anything about it. If they decide to pay us or not/all I can say is that you cannot fight it, because they went up a dollar on our hours along with continuing giving us hazard pay every time we get paid 🤷🏽‍♀️

  6. I work in a nursing facility that now has patients and employees with the COVID. We are now having to work more and longer hours with no help to give the care needed. Sometimes there’s only 3 CNA’s in the whole facility to care for these patients. What help can we get?

  7. Im a CNA and was put on covid unit without a choice and me and my son now have it and my son has really bad lung problems.

  8. Wow a one time payment of 250$ when there’s people sitting home by choice & some illegally collecting unemployment & the additional 600$ payment & this is all we get I guess it’s better than nothing 😑

  9. I worked from day one in a restaurant that was able to provide service on a daily basis. Were still not at 100% full capacity.

  10. I think it’s ridiculous! I work in a Dr’s office and have been directly exposed since day one. My husband works in a refinery and has been working since day 1 as well. Together we make a little over $50,000 but not separate. So now we don’t qualify? I would rather them just stop taking taxes out of both our checks and call it even! At least that would be fair in comparison to what others have received.

  11. My job never closed however you had the option to work from home. I decided to go into the office.

  12. I am a Daycare Worker
And I am Janitor at a Chemical plant never stopped working.

  13. This is a slap in the face to those who have daily risked their lives while many opted to stay home to make their money through unemployment. The ones who put their life at most risk providing face to face critical care to those who were infected won’t even qualify. This is just some political smoke and mirrors to be a speaking topic of what they rewarded the essential workers!

  14. Why is there an income requirement? We all no matter Income sacrificed the most precious gift. LIFE HEALTH FAMILY.

  15. U are so dam right I work at a group home and contract Covid 19 with no income coming in 250 are u serious that’s what they think of us really they can keep that shit

  16. Well, I am a nurse and have been out there dealing with the sick and swabbing people every day as well. Now while I feel like $250 is insulting, I also feel like it is better than nothing. So, for those of you who do not want it, you can send it my way and I’ll donate it to our local hospital workers. It is hard to be grateful when there is so much tragedy and sacrifice in our world.

  17. 19. Straight bs I’m a dsw working means my life could be in danger dealing w different clients just for y’all to give us 250 dollars 1 time only I think tf not

  20. I worked outside since it started still working I’m in construction we never shutdown do I qualify for the hazardous pay

  21. I think this is a joke my husband been working since this started busting his ass when people that haven’t worked in forever are sitting home collecting 800 a week on unemployment or people who was called back to work never went and still collecting unemployment so yeah I might sound like a bad person but I cant wait till this extra unemployment benefits stop. Wake up america stop free loading and get a damn job

  22. June 23 2020at2;59 pm I work more then 200 hours and then some every since it started and I work for foster farms in Farmerville la

  23. I work at a bank, and continued to work through the entire pandemic. I hope this includes us too. Ill take whatever I can get!

  24. I am a grocery store worker and $250 is a slap in the face. Since this has happened we’ve been working 40 plus hours a week and people setting at home gets $600+ a week? Ridiculous!!

  25. I work at a convenient store. I work 40 hours a week and since this been going over we have been very busy. I work around farm land with the only store being around with a deli and all.

  26. This is a slap in my face and my fellow co-workers that was essential and still is to our community. $250 isn’t much when it took us and still is taking us to be of importance to our economy with this pandemic still at large. The sacrifices that we continue to make on a day to day basis and all can be offered is $250 dollars. How about you keep your $250 dollars and we just deal with what is being dealt. Because seems to me their will never be a change until someone can make sense of this horrific offer. We are and have been on the front lines putting our own family members at risk and ourselves…and yet $250 is all that can be offered to the frontline workers. I’m very disappointed and I hate to see our frontline be insulted such as this. God bless you all and have mercy on us..because we need it.

  27. I thank u for the 250.00 if we get it I have been on the front scent this pandemic started I think 250.00 is not enough and peoples getting 600.00 to 800.00 a week

  28. I worked at a gas station and done merchandising all the way through but have got no extra pay by putting live on line

  29. I work with the mental Retardation clients. Our doors didn’t close none we’re open 24 hrs. Patients care Cma/ Dsw
