Intervention by an observant grandmother led to detectives charging a Houma man in connection with molestations of two young girls.
The woman was reading text messages on her granddaughter’s phone and discovered a disclosure by the girl that she had been molested sexually. During questioning by her grandmother, the child confirmed what the text said and detectives were notified on Monday, Jan. 6.
Investigation revealed that the girl and a friend, who is related to the suspect, had both been victimized.
Chester Champagne Jr. 53, was booked into the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex on two counts of molestation of a juvenile and one count of aggravated crime against nature.
“In the world we now live in, it’s more important than ever for parents and other adults to keep track of children’s communications devices, and what’s on them,” Sheriff Jerry Larpenter said. “Had this woman not been proactive as she was, we might not have learned of these crimes. Some people might say this is an invasion of privacy. The invasion this wise woman helped uncover was certainly much, much worse.”
Champagne remains jailed in lieu of a $200,000 bond.
