High School Football Season Reportedly to Start on Oct. 1

According to a report from WAFB, the LHSAA has agreed to allow the 2020 high school football season to begin on October 1, which is one week earlier than previously announced.

The LHSAA executive committee has unanimously approved a plan to move forward with high school football contact drills and its season, Robin Fanbrough with The Advocate reported.

She added the committee is allowing players to start hitting Thursday, September 10 and moved the official start of the season up to Thursday, October 1 through Saturday, October 3. She noted it was based on a report by Dr. Greg Stewart of Tulane, the chairman of the LHSAA’s Sports Medicine Committee.

The report stated LHSAA executive director Eddie Bonine pointed out that attendance at LHSAA indoor and outdoor events will continue to evolve based on changing COVID-19 guidelines on gathering in groups, which comes from the state.

The report added Dr. Stewart said he would give the okay on dropping the acclimation conditioning period from 21 days to 10-14 days because LHSAA teams have been working out in shoulder pads and helmets for a month.

Officials are still figuring out the guidelines and rules
