Higgins Commends President Trump for Signing USMCA Trade Deal

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) issued the following statement after President Trump signed the U.S. – Mexico – Canada Agreement (USMCA). Congressman Higgins voted in support of the USMCA trade deal in the U.S. House of Representatives on December 19, 2019.
“The USMCA is a win for America and another promise kept by President Trump. The newly signed deal creates jobs, increases our leverage with other ongoing international trade negotiations, generates broad, long-term economic growth, expands market access, and levels the playing field for American workers. My office and the Louisiana Congressional Delegation have worked very hard with the President’s staff on USMCA for over 2 years. Louisiana farmers, manufacturers, and exporters will benefit greatly.”
President Donald Trump signed the bill into law Wednesday that is a major rewrite of the rules of trade with Canada and Mexico. Trump says it replaces what he calls the “nightmare” of a Clinton-area agreement that governed trade among the three countries. Trump says that agreement encouraged factories to leave the United States and relocate south of the border to take advantage of low-wage Mexican labor. He says the new deal with Canada and Mexico will keep jobs, wealth and growth in America.  Experts say the impact will be modest, given that Canada and Mexico already represent the top two export markets for U.S. goods.
